Sixty years ago, on July 2, 1964, President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into federal law. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibited discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, and it laid the foundation for the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This anniversary is a reminder that this landmark law is within living memory for many Americans, and though many prominent leaders are no longer with us, we march forward carrying the torch to continue the fight for freedom, equality, and justice for everyone.
